2016 SUPER ALL-STATE CROSS COUNTRY TEAM

n the boys side, Hoover’s Tommy McDonough won one of the most thrilling races in recent memory, outkicking Hewitt-Trussville’s John Ngaruiya to win the Class 7A individual title by just one-tenth of a second. On the girls side, St. Paul’s freshman Isabel Valenzuela and Montgomery Catholic sophomore Amaris Tyynismaa each won a third straight state title in 5A and 4A, respectively. Now – with the 2016 season in the history books – let’s take a look at this year’s 2016 Super All-State Cross Country Team: Girls Runner of the Year: Anna Grace Morgan, Mountain Brook The senior runner won the Class 7A individual title in 17:46.01, posting the fastest time at the 2016 AHSAA Cross Country Championships in Oakville. Lainey Phelps, Homewood: Freshman won Class 6A title in 18:02.13 Amaris Tyynismaa: Montgomery Catholic: Sophomore won third straight Class 4A title in 18:07.76 Grace Jensen, McGill-Toolen: Junior finished second in Class 7A, running 18:18.06 Isabel Valenzuela, St. Paul’s: Freshman won Class 5A in 18:21.33 Abbey Zane, Huntsville: Senior finished third in Class 7A, clocking 18:48.32 Harper McGowan, Auburn: Freshman finished fourth in Class 7A, running 18:35.47 Samantha Rogers, Auburn: Freshman finished fifth in Class 7A, running 18:42.87 Presley Miles, St. James: Eight-grader finished second in Class 4A, finishing in 18:48.11 BOYS Runner of the Year: Tommy McDonough, Hoover The senior won the Class 7A title in dramatic fashion, running 15.39.70 to win the individual title by one-tenth of a second John Ngaruiya, Hewitt-Trussville: Senior finished second in Class 7A, clocking 15:39.80 Joshua Escoe, Auburn: Senior fan third in Class 7A, finishing in 15:42.26 Jack Rogers, Auburn: Senior ran 15:52.55 to finish fourth in Class 7A Nate Pudner, Auburn: Senior was fifth in Class 7A, finishing in 15:55.62 Caleb Van Geffen, Oak Mountain: Senior was sixth in Class &A, running 16:00.64 Hunter Harwell, Mountain Brook: The sophomore was the fastest underclassman at the state meet, finishing seventh in 7A in 16:00.95. Will Stone, Homewood: Sophomore won the Class 6A title, clocking 16:01.40 Jay Day, Baker: Won the Class 7A, Section 1 title and ran 10th at the state meet, finishing in 16:03.76
