Mountain Brook's Trendon Watford did a little bit of everything and got plenty of help from his teammates, too.

The 6-foot-7 Watford scored 23 of his 33 points in the first half, shining in a 1-on-1 matchup with 6-foot-9 Pelham senior and Alabama signee Alex Reese, and added eight rebounds to lead the Spartans (13-0) to a 72-56 victory over Pelham at the Steel City Invitational semifinals.

Watford scored in just about every way imaginable -- hitting three 3-pointers, showing off a drop-step spin for a layup and adding a thunderous dunk.

“He played great,” Mountain Brook coach Bucky McMillan said. “What people don’t know is he did all that and he never takes a bad shot. He’s so unselfish.

“He could probably score 45 every night and we’d score 55,” McMillan added. “We’ve been scoring about 80 every night and he’s scoring 25, 27 and he’s getting other guys open looks.”

Watford said he didn’t feel any pressure to perform against Reese, noting the two have played against each other many teams on the AAU circuit and in high school games.

“I was just trying to play hard,” Watford said.

Reese finished with 11 points, six rebounds and a blocked shot. He went to the bench midway through the fourth quarter with knee soreness. Reese said he noticed his knees were bothering him before the game.

Reese showcased his athleticism despite the knee problem, breaking the Mountain Brook press with an end-to-end dribble drive.

“I think I could’ve done better,” Reese said, “but I didn’t play as many minutes as I needed to because my knee was bothering me a little bit.”
