Mountain Brook’s Trendon Watford has been named to the MaxPreps 2015-16 Freshman All-American Team, the latest national recognition for one of Alabama’s youngest high school basketball stars.

Watford was placed on the first team. He is the lone selection from Alabama on three MaxPreps All-freshmen teams. Meanwhile, LaMelo Ball and Onyeka Okongwu of Chino Hills (Calif.) were named National Co-Freshmen of the Year.

This season, Watford made his debut at Mountain Brook – after transferring from Shades Valley, where older brother Christian starred en route to Indiana University. The younger Watford averaged 23.7 points 11.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists, helping the Spartans reach the Class 7A Northeast Regional before falling to Gadsden City.

Still, Watford was named to Class 7A’s second-team. He was also named the Birmingham area’s Player of the Year by AL.com, edging out older competition from Spain Park junior center Austin Wiley, Woodlawn guard Javien Williams, Pelham junior forward Alex Reese and Spain Park guard Jamal Johnson.

Watford, thanks to his 6-7 frame, showcased his ability to do just about anything on the court, scoring on the perimeter, at the rim. He blocked shots and set up teammates. And he thrilled with athleticism which has yet to fully be realized.

This offseason, he's playing with Alabama Challenge 17U. And already, he's picked up another offer: Central Florida. Alabama and Mississippi State have already offered, while Florida, Virginia, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Auburn have shown interest.
