Mountain Brook Routs Hueytown 60-18 in Season Opener

Mountain Brook's defense set the tone early, and the offense never let up as the Spartans opened the season with a 60-18 win over Hueytown.

After forcing a third-down stop on Hueytown's opening possession, Luke Carroll and the Spartan special teams blocked the punt, setting up a 9-yard touchdown scamper from John Colvin. Pruet James found Wallace Hunter for the two-point conversion. Mountain Brook's defense delivered an encore on Hueytown's next possession — another third-down stop, another blocked punt, this one recovered in the end zone by Miller Teague. James ran in the two-point try himself, and just like that, Mountain Brook led 16-0 with 8:21 left in the first quarter.

The Spartans kept building from there. A 37-yard field goal from William Russ and a 4-yard touchdown run from Colvin pushed the lead to 26-0 after one quarter.

The second quarter opened with sophomore defensive back Sam Young picking off a Hueytown pass — dubbed a "Taco Mama Turnover" on the team's broadcast. Ten seconds later, junior quarterback Caden Bryant found junior receiver Brock Wilkinson for a 37-yard touchdown. Colvin punched in two more scores before halftime, one on the ground and one on a 26-yard reception, sending Mountain Brook into the break with a 47-6 lead.

James connected with Archie Andrews for a 35-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw the offense turn to its depth, with Robinson Peer getting reps behind Butler Teague and Colvin — Peer capped the night with a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 60-18.

James finished 7-of-10 passing for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Colvin carried 22 times for 159 yards and three touchdowns, adding two catches for 32 yards and another score through the air. Mountain Brook averaged 7.7 yards per play and converted 7 of 10 third-down attempts across nine possessions.
