Game 2 Preview: Mountain Brook at UMS-Wright

Mountain Brook (1-0) hits the road for the second of three straight away games to open the season, traveling to face UMS-Wright (0-1) in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Spartans enter fresh off their 60-18 win at Hueytown and are looking to build on a 2025 campaign that ended with a 9-4 record and a third-round appearance in the 6A playoffs.

UMS-Wright, now in Sam Williams' second season as head coach, dropped its opener 42-35 at Jackson Prep. Williams took over for Terry Curtis and posted a 6-5 record last season. Notably, Mountain Brook assistant coach Richard Kelly played at UMS-Wright, adding a personal connection to this first-time matchup.

Last week: Mountain Brook opened the season in dominant fashion, defeating Hueytown 60-18 on the road. The Spartan defense set the tone early, forcing back-to-back blocked punts on third-down stops, which special teams converted into a quick 16-0 lead in the first quarter. Quarterback Pruet James went 7-of-10 passing for 114 yards and two touchdowns, while junior quarterback Caden Bryant added a 37-yard touchdown strike to Brock Wilkinson in relief. Running back John Colvin was the workhorse of the night, carrying 22 times for 159 yards and three touchdowns while adding a receiving score as well. Mountain Brook led 47-6 at halftime and cruised from there, with third-string back Robinson Peer punching in a touchdown of his own in the fourth quarter. The Spartans finished the night averaging 7.7 yards per play and converting 7 of 10 third-down chances. It was a complete performance to open the season and a strong early signal for what this Mountain Brook team can do on both sides of the ball.
