It came down to the wire on Saturday, as Mountain Brook Varsity Spartans grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion, 5-4, over Leeds Greenwave Softball. The game was tied at four in the bottom of the fifth when
Anne Turner Goldman singled, scoring one run.
Despite falling down by four runs in the third inning, Leeds Greenwave Softball tried to fight back. Leeds Greenwave Softball closed the gap by scoring on an error, a single, and an error.
Mountain Brook Varsity Spartans were the first to get on the board in the first when
Claire Robinett singled, scoring one run.
Mountain Brook Varsity Spartans added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after Robinett singled to the right side of the infield, Mary B. Arendall walked, and Goldman walked, each scoring one run.
Leeds Greenwave Softball tied the game in the top of the fourth thanks to an error, a single by Katrina Poe, and an error.
Emma Durr earned the win for Mountain Brook Varsity Spartans. The right-handed pitcher allowed three hits and four runs (one earned) over five innings, striking out none and walking one. Audrey Whitcomb led things off in the circle for Leeds Greenwave Softball. The starting pitcher allowed six hits and four runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out none and walking three.
Reagan Rape,
Molly Shea, and Robinett each collected two hits for Mountain Brook Varsity Spartans. Goldman and Robinett each drove in two runs for Mountain Brook Varsity Spartans. Arendall paced Mountain Brook Varsity Spartans with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, collecting six walks for the game. Mountain Brook Varsity Spartans ran wild on the base paths, tallying four stolen bases for the game.
Poe, the number seven hitter for Leeds Greenwave Softball, led the way with two runs batted in. The outfielder went 1-for-2 on the day. Tanner Galloway, Poe, and Indya Rogers each collected one hit for Leeds Greenwave Softball.
